Once upon a time, one of the biggest actresses of Bollywood, Kajol, has now come back on the big screen to carry a horror thriller film titled Maa on her shoulders. The latest Bollywood release, Maa, features her in the lead as a mother to a young daughter, just as the title suggests. The film is directed by Vishal Furia, known for helming the horror franchise Chhorii. Maa was released in theaters on June 27, 2025.
As we know about the current state of the Hindi film industry, there are barely any pure horror movies made for the audience, and the definition of a pure horror film doesn’t include horror comedies. In such times, Kajol’s latest mythological horror thriller gives the vibe of something fresh made with effort, as per the trailer.
Whatever hype the film has developed for itself is built by two factors – its trailer and its cinematic universe. If you are not aware of the cinematic universe part, then this is a good time to know that Maa is set in the same universe as Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan. The supernatural thriller Ajay Devgn movie from last year became a box office success and also got critical acclaim.
Taking the love of the audience for Shaitaan forward, the makers decided to produce Maa, which would further be followed by Shaitaan 2. However, Maa has stepped away from the black magic route like the previous Ajay Devgn film and deals with demons who would capture the young daughter of Kajol, with the leading lady as the saviour parent.
Coming to the marketing aspect of the film, its trailer saw a decent response from the audience. Later, two songs from the film were released, which barely contributed to attracting interest in the film.
As for the box office expectations, Maa is not expected to open very big as it lacks a leading star with a considerable audience pull. Additionally, the film doesn’t have any popular songs. Shaitaan didn’t have any popular songs here, but the trailer of the film did build great hype. Ajay Devgn’s presence did matter for the film, which would not be the case here.
The full-fledged Maa booking began on June 26, just a day before release, and hence, the film didn’t get any great results in its pre-sales as expected. Due to low pre-release hype, the team introduced a Buy 2 Get 1 ticket free on BookMyShow even before the film was released. As of the final Maa advance booking updates, the upcoming Kajol starrer sold 15,000 tickets in pre-sales in national chains across India.
Kajol’s Maa is made at a budget of Rs 50 crore approx. Going by the genre of the film, a well-made pure horror film can generate great hype on its own merit and word-of-mouth post-release as well. A recent example of this was the Hollywood film Final Destination: Bloodlines. There is a wide audience in India who craves such supernatural thrillers, and Maa could satisfy their craving only if the end product is accepted well on the ground level.
Right from day 1 of its release, Maa has been put in a theatrical competition with Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par. The popular comedy-drama movie has been running successfully in theaters since last week and will continue doing so for a good time. However, the two films attract a completely different audience, so this competition is not expected to be anything greatly harmful.
Maa Box Office Collection Worldwide
As of the opening day, Maa Day 1 collection stood at Rs 4.75 crore India nett. As the Maa reviews from the public and the critics show a mixed-to-positive response, it is safe to say the film can perform well enough at least for its beginning few days. Only if the word-of-mouth turns out to be extremely strong, the Maa Day 2 collection and onwards will ensure a box office success.
Keeping the Maa movie budget and collection along with the hype in consideration, the Maa Daily Box Office collection is expected to show its run on a very small level, while Sitaare Zameen Par would dominate the demand at the ticket windows.
