As we obviously know, there are tons of film industries in India. However, not all of them produce or market any local content which can appeal to the whole nation. This results in a handful of 3 or 4 industries carrying the whole Indian cinema on their shoulders. These industries rarely produce movies which attract a massive audience beyond its own language and proves to be an all time blockbuster at the box office which the generations would remember.
In recent times, such humongous grossers are being produced only by Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and Sandalwood. A few of such recent films include the likes of Chhaava, Pushpa 2: The Rule, Pathaan and Jawan. These movies have been successful in being the highest grossers of multiple different states all around India. Following is the state-wise highest grossing movies of Indian cinema:

1. Maharashtra

The Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj biopic Chhaava led by Vicky Kaushal was the highest grossing movie in Maharashtra. This film was directed by Laxman Utekar under the banner of Maddock Films. Alongside Vicky, it featured a huge cast of Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Vineet Kumar Singh, Divya Dutta and Diana Penty.
Out of the film’s India nett collection of over Rs 500 crore, the Maharashtra state contributed with over Rs 300 crore gross which is clearly justifiable for a movie based on a Maratha emperor. Being the only Indian movie state to contribute with over Rs 300 crore for a single movie, Maharashtra is now the state with the highest box office gross for a single movie.

2. Gujarat

The recently released Telugu blockbuster Pushpa 2: The Rule became the highest grossing movie in Gujarat. Directed by Sukumar, the film was led by Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil in its star cast. Along with the several achievements of this pan-India blockbuster from Tollywood, it shows the clear acceptance of a Telugu movie by a variety of audiences.
The much-loved sequel Pushpa 2 currently holds the record of being the highest grossing movie in 8 Indian states simultaneously namely Gujarat, Rajasthan, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. This magnum opus blockbuster opened to over Rs 200 crore domestically and ended its lifetime run with a record India gross of more than Rs 900 crore.

3. Delhi

The spy action thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge / Dhurandhar 2 is the highest grossing movie in Delhi, the national capital of India. Released in 2026, the film is directed by Aditya Dhar and stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi in lead roles alongside Danish Pandor, Gaurav Gera, and others in memorable supporting roles.
This mega blockbuster was announced in December 2025 in the end credits of its all-time blockbuster prequel Dhurandhar and released only 3 months later. Along with Delhi, it stands as the highest grossing movie in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh too. On its release, the film opened with Rs 188.55 crore grossed at the worldwide box office. In its lifetime run, this A-rated action entertainer collected Rs 1014.53 crore nett in Hindi, becoming the highest grossing Hindi film ever. Later, the film grossed over Rs 1000 crore globally. With such a humongous gross, this S.S. Rajamouli directorial also became the highest grossing movie in Telangana. In these two states, the gross for the film stays unbeatable for more than 3 years.

5. Karnataka

Released in 2025, the film overtook Kantara (2022) as the highest grossing film in Karnataka. 6. Kerala

The all-time blockbuster Vaazha 2 / Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros, is the highest grossing movie in Kerala state. Released in 2026, the film is a sequel to the popular hit Malayalam movie Vaazha: Biopic of a Billion Boys. What makes the all-time blockbuster achievement of this film bigger than it already is the fact that it is led by very lesser-known names in its star cast and directed by a debutant, Savin SA.
Its cast consists of Hashir H., Alan Bin Siraj, Ajin Joy, Vinayak V and Devaraj in the lead roles. While expectations from the movie at the box office were not very high, it crossed Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, a superhero film, and became the highest grossing Malayalam film in the state due to an exceptionally large positive WOM. This coming-of-age comedy drama film grossed Rs 129.54 crore at the Kerala box office in its lifetime run.

7. Tamil Nadu

The Kollywood film industry has several big superstars and Thalapathy Vijay is one of them and probably the biggest of them. 8. Assam & Rest of North East

Unlike the rest of the Indian states where Bollywood and South Indian movies rule over the hearts of the Indian audience, the highest grossing movie in Assam state is Roi Roi Binale, an Assamese film.
Released in 2025, it saw a massive success at the box office because it was the final movie of Zubeen Garg, a singer and actor from the Assamese and Hindi film industry who was hailed like a legend in Assam but tragically passed away less than a month before the film’s release. This musical romantic drama film of Zubeen Garg was led by him alongside Mousumi Alifa, Joy Kashyap, Achurjya Borpatra, and other actors in the star cast. Additionally, it was directed by Rajesh Bhuyan.
