Horror thriller is a genre which has been missing from Bollywood for a while when we are not counting horror comedies. To mark the presence of this genre in the Hindi film industry, Kajol starrer Maa has released in theaters today. This latest installment of the Shaitaan cinematic universe ticks all the boxes needed to make a commercial and pure horror thriller in Bollywood. However, it does miss at several places too.
The Not So Convincing Plot
The film is centered around a happy family from Kolkata consisting of Ambika (Kajol), her husband Shuvankar (Indraneil Sengupta), and daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma). In their ancestry, a baby girl is sacrificed to Maa Kali in order to protect the village from a demon called The Daitya. One day, Shuvankar’s father passes away in Chandarpur after which the family travels to the village. The same night, Shuvankar dies under mysterious circumstances followed by Shweta being taken by The Daitya. Now, it is up to Ambika to save her daughter with the help of village sarpanch, Joydev (Ronit Roy).
The complete story of the film is filled with several illogical flaws, due to which you end up questioning a huge part of the film rather than enjoying it. When the film is not entertaining, these flaws become the centre of attention. Cutting down several of these illogical plot points and scenes would have helped in reducing the run-time of the film which was very much needed.

Analyzing The Performances of the Cast of Maa
The cast of Maa 2025 consists of Kajol, Ronit Roy, Kherin Sharma, and Indraneil Sengupta in the lead along with several supporting actors. When we talk about the performances, barely any point is there where the actors didn’t fit in the scene.
Kajol stands out as the best performer of the film. Her character demands intensity as well as emotions which she portrays very well in this haunting thriller. Every scene she is present in, she owns it with her range.
Ronit Roy has turned out to be a surprise package in the film. His performance is something out of which not much was popularly expected but still, it shined bright throughout the film. His character arc that grows along the film is honoured by his acting. If not for the stereotypical Bengali accent, he would have been counted as the best actor out of the cast.
Kherin Sharma as the victim of The Daitya has done a good job. Her expressions portray the love for her on-screen mother Ambika as well as the feeling of thrill and fear wherever needed. Indraneil Sengupta appears to be okayish throughout his screen time.
Supporting actors of Maa consist of Jitin Gulati as Sarfaraz, Roopkatha Chakraborty as Dipika, and Vibha Rani as the priestess. All of their performances does not leave any great mark but rather turn out to be just well enough.
The Technical Aspects – A Mixed Bag
Director Vishal Furia is known for helming horror films in a similar space like Chhorii and Chhorii 2. His experience does justice in building an atmosphere full of thrills, fear, and emotions through the actors and sets. The cinematography has turned out to be good enough to support the same atmosphere of the film.
The mythological angle is portrayed well in the story by Saiwyn Quadras. The central plot of a mother fighting against an evil force for her child turns out to be a safe bet for churning out the emotions of the audience. Due to this, emotions hit hard, but that too feels stretched over several moments. The film began on a promising note but went on to be severely inconsistent throughout its run time. The second half of the film has a few sequences which stand out and help make the film overall a better watch.
Dialogues by Aamil Keeyan Khan and Ajit Jagtap suit the mood of the film but could have been much better to establish some thrills. The CGI goes on and off throughout the film. While the on-screen visuals are highly satisfying with realism at some places, it could have been much better at several places too. On several instances, the AI-generated scenes look fake and are clearly caught red-handed.
The film has only two songs with a whole lot of background score. Here, the BGM does just a good job for the theatrical experience. As for the songs, they are good but forgettable. Additionally, many people are not even aware of the songs in this movie. Humnava is a romantic song turned emotional to fit the plot of the film while Kali Shakti is an intense number.
All these things aside, all these flaws become noticeable only because the writing of the film is weak and lacks the entertainment quotient. Only if it was gripping enough, all these flaws would have went ignored.
Box Office Commentary
Maa release date is 27 June, 2025. Before its release, the theaters were already well occupied by Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, which can surely affect the Maa box office collection worldwide. Even in advance booking, this mythological horror thriller did not get a very good response. The full-fledged booking was open for just 1 day, where the team announced a Friday exclusive offer of Buy 2 Get 1 ticket free, but that too didn’t help much.
The Day 1 collection of Maa is lying among the low single digits. For a female-led horror thriller with no leading A-lister on the screen, such an opening can surely be considered decent. If the word-of-mouth turns out to be extremely positive, something like the recently released Final Destination: Bloodlines in India, Maa would surely be a HIT verdict at the box office. If not, then failure is the most certain option.
Additionally, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is always there to attract the majority crowd towards itself. However, both films have a different genre, which can help Maa run at its own good pace in case of audience acceptance.
Conclusion
As per our Maa trailer review, the film initially felt like a promising watch. However, the film doesn’t stand up to those feelings. The cinematic universe connection with Shaitaan is seen only in the post-credit scene and hence turns out to be very forceful. Such a connection feels just for the sake of it, while the whole movie doesn’t stand up to Shaitaan in any way.
To sum it up, Maa is an ordinary affair, more like a missed opportunity. With a good budget and technical team in hand, the output could have been much better. However, the writing and direction made the film fall.
Maa is just a decent product lacking any major element to make it the talk of the town. The film has its moments, but it is not something extraordinary.
