What Are The Merits of Thamma?

The screenplay of Thamma in totality is very good – full of fun, romance, and emotions – exactly what was expected in Thamma early reviews after watching the Thamma trailer, and holds the interest of the audience right from the start of the movie. The first half is based around the chemistry of the two leads, Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, elevated by an impactful background score by Sachin-Jigar as well as the performances of both the leads. The dialogues and comic punches are written very well, definitely not cringey or for adults, but for the whole family.
The characters of Rashmika Mandanna and Paresh Rawal are very well written and hence likable. While the screenplay’s quality in the second half does take a dip, it doesn’t stop being entertaining. Even the parts where you are not able to understand the story of the film, the story explains itself right at that moment.
The songs by Sachin-Jigar are well choreographed, fit well into the film’s narrative, and are very enjoyable individually as well. The cinematography by Saurabh Goswami is also an impressive work. Along with a promising VFX, Thamma ends up being a visually stunning product. The cameos, revealed as well as unrevealed ones, are well established in the story and hence help in making the film way more interesting.

Thamma Film Cast

What Are The Demerits of Thamma?

A few points throughout the screenplay are monotonous and repetitive, but they are still entertaining and hence don’t have a very harsh effect on one’s overall viewing experience. The major sequences where the film starts disappointing land in its second half as the movie starts feeling dragged. Other than that, the climax is very disappointing. As per the story that was running well enough, a very wholesome ending was needed, which was eventually felt to be missing.
Along with such demerits, Thamma also suffers from several illogical sequences, like a police officer being shown as a member of the Betal sect, which makes you question that how come the police offer never got background checked. Another example here is that Ayushmann Khurrana’s character is later shown as heartless, but still has emotions for his love interest and his family. Illogical sequences like these are easily noticeable, which ruin the film-watching experience as the audience subconsciously tries to connect dots or justify those chunks but the entertainment factor is sustained.
Additionally, this horror comedy has a good volume of comedy but lacks elements of horror. While the balance was well enough earlier in Stree 2, the same balance is missing in Thamma. Much more horror and terror would have heavily elevated the film-watching experience. Among other places where it falters is Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance. Once upon a time, he was the priority of Bollywood filmmakers to have as an antagonist, but in Thamma, he disappoints with probably the weakest performance of his career.

How Are The Performances of The Cast of Thamma?

Ayushmann Khurrana is an actor of great calibre, and he aces his role in Thamma to give the best performance of his career. Whether the scene requires aggression, emotions, or comedy, Ayushmann as Alok fits for every requirement. Meanwhile, Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character as well as his performance are the total opposite of Ayushmann Khurrana’s, as he delivers probably the worst performance of his career as the antagonist. Rashmika Mandanna has shown a solid performance, easily the best of her career. Her act in the film fits her character and comes out as convincing and honest. Paresh Rawal both have shown a solid performance. The supporting cast has done a great job as well.

Box Office Opening Note

Ever since this horror comedy was announced, it spoke of great potential to run successfully at the box office, driven by the Thamma movie release date of Diwali, and hinted at by the Thamma advance booking. It sold 80,000 tickets in Indian national chains (PVR Inox and Cinepolis) for its opening day.
As of the Thamma collection, this horror comedy has opened with a decent figure of Rs 22.50 crore Hindi nett. The Thamma movie 2025 release date of the post-Diwali period helped the film massively in reaching this position on its Day 1. On a non-holiday, Thamma would have seen a much smaller opening. This film put its best numbers in Delhi/NCR circuits and did solid business in Lucknow and Kanpur. At the same time, it has shown a low performance in Maharashtra. With positive reviews pouring in, Thamma box office report is expected to show success in the long run. Check out the complete Thamma day wise box office collection here.

The Final Take

Thamma is a very wholesome entertainer, decorated by great dialogues, songs, and cinematography.  A few disappointments, like the climax, made this film miss the chance of being a near-perfect horror comedy. Yet, this Ayushmann Khurrana new movie has ended up as a great Diwali entertainer for the family audiences.
