Harmony with A.R. Rahman All Episodes Review

Episode 1: Entering the Kalari

The first episode takes us to the world of Kerala’s temple percussion tradition. By exploring the Mizhavu drum, Rahman explores the use of rhythm and percussion in Kerala’s classical theatre. In ancient times, and even today, large-sized copper drums have been used in Koodiyattam performances, symbolizing a blend of modern sound and traditional beat cycles.

Episode 2:  Ustad Mohi Baha’uddin Dagar – Rudra Veena (Maharashtra)

In this episode, the tradition of Dhrupad, the oldest Hindustani classical music, is glorified. Here, a 20-generation musical legacy named Ustad Dagar plays the Rudra Veena, a musical instrument that symbolizes deep meditation. The episode ends with both Rahman and Ustad discussing the tranquil effect of the Dhrupad.

Episode 3: Lourembam Bedabati—Khunung Eshei (Manipur)

In the third episode of the Harmony with A. R. Rahman web series, Rahman travels to the northeast and sees Lourembam Bedabati, a Manipuri folk singer. He practices Khunung Eshei, a traditional narrative singing. The episode weaves together the exquisiteness of the Manipuri music and the sociocultural narratives that each song unfolds.

Episode 4: Mickma Tshering Lepcha—Lepcha Music (Sikkim)

Traveling through Sikkim, Rahman meets Mikma Lepcha and explores the endangered Lepcha music tradition. The fourth episode shows a juxtaposition of pristine scenic landscapes with heartfelt melody, emphasizing the crucial role of music in preserving identity.

Episode 5: The Grand Fusion—Chennai Studio

The final episode brings all four artists to the studio of Rahman in Chennai—Panchathan Record Inn Studio. Here, everyone together with Rahman co-creates an original composition, blending all their styles into one. This fusion musical art is a celebration of the union of past, present, classical, and contemporary art forms.
