A Normally Seen Before Plot

Aap Jaisa Koi is centered around Shrinenu Tripathi (R. Madhavan), a shy and middle class Sanskrit teacher who is unmarried at the age of 42. He has a streak of being rejected by girls due to some or the other reason which has made him almost give up on thinking about marriage. His friend Deepak (Namit Das) introduces him to Aap Jaisa Koi, an app where he can talk with girls anytime he wants. After a few days of calls on the app, he gets a marriage proposal from Madhu Bose (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a French teacher from Kolkata. Though things begin happily between the two, their secrets get unboxed and families end up picking up rivalry with each other, leaving them both away from each other.
Two people love each other, then break up due to secrets and their families but later end up coming back together once again due to a change of heart and thoughts. This is a trope you would have seen in tons of old and new Bollywood films and it might have made Aap Jaisa Koi an ignorable film if not for the deserving treatment it got i.e., musically and romantically well made.

Analyzing The Performances of the Cast of Aap Jaisa Koi

The Aap Jaisa Koi cast consists of R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh in the lead along with Namit Das, Ayesha Raza, Manish Chaudhary, Beena Banerjee, Karan Wahi, Divyam Dubey, and others in the supporting cast.
As expected, R. Madhavan stands out as the best performer in the film. He captures the introvert but lovely character very well. He has performed in romantic scenes, been a part of some comical punches, and has been dramatic with equal perfection.
Fatima Sana Shaikh’s character is mostly involved in romantic and dramatic scenes where she has been a well enough fit.
The supporting characters include the families and friends of Shrinenu as well as Madhu from the film. Though they do not have any large screen time, the overall performance of the supporting cast has been just good enough to suit the vibe of the film.

The Technical Aspects – Way Too Pleasing

Director Vivek Soni has done just an average job. The film consists of many scenes which could have been hard hitting or memorable but the run time continues to rush and not make the audience feel anything. Though there are several moments which become memorable, a lot of opportunities were lost due to a short run time. If the film had been just 15-20 minutes longer, the end product would have been much better than what it currently is.
Though R Madhvan’s Aap Jaisa Koi is a low budget film, the cinematography does not make you think of it as anything less than a grand Dharma film or an aesthetically pleasing Netflix project. It totally matches the vibe of the film and most probably could not have been better. Writers Radhika Anand and Jehan Handa have done just a fair enough job by leaving out very much to criticize and very much to appreciate too.
The film starts off at an acceptable pace with some good enough comical scenes. However, as the first half progresses, the story turns out to be highly predictable but yet engaging. In the second half, it almost runs on the lines of a typical inter-cultural Bollywood rom-com.
The music album is the highlight of the movie. Without the need of any loud tracks, the Aap Jaisa Koi songs album just lets you delve into their soothing effect as soon as you know it’s time for a song in the film. Aap Jaisa Koi sung by Mohit Chauhan is a great song to reminisce of one’s love while Dhuan Dhuan sung by Sanjith Hegde is a great sad version of that song, both composed by Rochak Kohli.
Justin Prabhakaran has composed three songs for the film – Saare Jag Mein (the best of the album), Jaadu Wali Chimki (a feel-good song for the leading lady’s introduction), and Mila Tujhe (a lovely duet). While one can’t stop adoring over the music album, the BGM of the movie also plays a great role in letting you dive into the world of Aap Jaisa Koi.

Aap Jaisa Koi vs Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Movie Review

Another romantic drama titled Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan was released in theaters very recently on 18 July 2025. The film stars Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor in the leads. With the two movies being love stories released around the same time, it needs to be mentioned that Aap Jaisa Koi is a better watch. As of Aap Jaisa Koi vs Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan Movie Review, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan is a much worse film than the former.

The Rejected Draft of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani?

Yes, Aap Jaisa Koi is a great watch but one just can’t stop noticing all the similarities the film has with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Both of them are Karan Johar films which gives a clear idea into where the inspiration is coming from.
The family of the male leads come from a regressive background while the female lead and her family are Bengali, progressive, and feminists (which later becomes the plot of the movie). The Tripathi’s (men of the male lead family) hate the Bose family due to the equal standards between men and women which they follow.
As the women of the male lead family are introduced to such a world of respect, they go up against their own family to live a respectful life along with the male lead of the film. What remains behind is that one member of the male lead’s family i.e., the antagonist whose regressive nature loses the fight and results in him living all alone.
Most importantly, the Durga pooja event shown through a song marks a turning point in both the films. All of this makes for a huge compilation of similarities between the two love stories you simply can’t ignore. However, these similarities don’t matter as long as one is enjoying the film.

Conclusion

The Aap Jaisa Koi official trailer promised a wholesome love story and the film really stood by that promise. Was there a lack in the efforts? Yes, clearly. But is it a bad film? No, definitely not. It can be defined as a one time watch, something you can watch with your family or your girlfriend for a good 1 hour and 55 minutes of Netflix and chill.
