There have been very few court cases in Indian history that have shaken the nation, and the Shah Bano case is one of them. This case from 1978, which got a judgment from the supreme court in 1985, found its place in journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti. In an era of making highly preachy and enraging real-life-inspired films, Haq film based on Shah Bano’s case, remains simple and true to its roots with a few fictional elements sprinkled upon it.

What is Haq Plot About?
The Haq trailer and the film show that the film revolves around Shazia Bano (Yami Gautam Dhar), her husband Adv. Abbas Khan (Emraan Hashmi), their married life, and the legal battle that approaches. In the 1970s and 80s, Shazia Bano and Mohammed Ahmad Khan are a happily married couple until their private life turns intense.
As Abbas practices his right from Islamic law to marry more than once, he brings home his second wife, Saira (Vartika Singh). Amid the rising tensions between him and Shah Bano, he gives her a divorce through triple talaq, which leads to a battle for post-divorce maintenance and justice desired by every Muslim woman.

What Works in Haq?
What works well with Haq is nearly the entire first half, consisting of the direction by Suparn Verma, performances by the Haq film cast, i.e., Yami Gautam, Emraan Hashmi, Vartika Singh, Sheeba Chaddha, etc., and the writing and dialogues by Reshu Nath. Coming specifically to Yami Gautam, she has delivered one of the best performances of her career. The feel of the movie is kept the same throughout its runtime with the inclusion of as few fictional elements as possible.
Haq (2025) remains true to its source material with tension, emotions, and dialogues that connect without going overboard. The overall portrayal of this case features a good blend of religious, legal, and gender issues associated with the case. The courtroom scenes portray a good blend of impact and simplicity without going too overboard. Additionally, the performances, cinematography, and production design are kept authentic throughout with elements like the looks of characters, surroundings, courtrooms, and dressing, all of it relating to the era of the 70s and 80s.
The songs are not chartbuster material that could sit in your playlist for a long time. However, they fit well throughout the narrative of the movie. The climax of Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam’s Haq movie is memorable.
What Does Not Work in Haq?
The film exceeds expectations in the first half but shows a disappointing decline in the viewing experience in its second half. The film takes a routine approach in its second half, one that is slow and barely consists of any points of interest. Even the emotional scenes are left as those that just exist but could have made the film better as a whole. While such things repel Haq from being a near-perfect film, the latter half is still saved by the courtroom scenes and the funeral sequence.
Additionally, scenes showing communal and social outrage towards Shazia Bano could have been more effective and impactful. However, they fail to leave a mark.
Final Take on Haq
As for the overall Haq Review, it is a good courtroom drama but certainly not something that you would regret missing out on. It clearly is not something made for a theatrical watch. If you are wondering Haq movie where to watch besides OTT, the OTT platform where it will be released is currently known. However, the film promises what was expected from the Haq YouTube trailer and is an appreciable one-time watch made on the cinematically lesser-explored Shah Bano case.
