A Story of Transformation and Determination
The film features Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan), a directionless young guy from Delhi without ambition. He struggles with discipline and eventually leaves the Indian Army after joining impulsively. However, after being rejected by his girlfriend Romi Dutta (Preity Zinta) and realizing his flaws, he resolves to return to the academy and become a devoted soldier.
Karan’s adventure culminates in the Kargil War, during which he and his crew must seize a vital mountain held by opposing forces. The shift from an aimless teenager to a motivated leader is the film’s emotional center.
Memorable Dialogue: Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan): “Mujhse nahin hoga…” (I can’t do this…) Amitabh Bachchan’s character replies: “Tum sirf apne dukh dekh rahe ho… fauj mein sirf ‘main’ nahin hota, ‘hum’ hota hai!” (You’re only seeing your struggle… in the army, it’s not about ‘me,’ it’s about ‘us!’)

1. Hrithik Roshan, as Karan Shergill, gives one of his most subtle performances, perfectly blending immaturity and transformation.
2. Preity Zinta portrays Romi Dutta, inspired by writer Barkha Dutt, as a determined reporter encouraging Karan to find his purpose.
3. Amitabh Bachchan plays Colonel Sunil Damle, a harsh yet intelligent mentor who influences Karan’s life.
4. Boman Irani is Karan’s father and the voice of society’s expectations.
5. Om Puri plays Subedar Pritam Singh, adding credibility to the military atmosphere.
Despite this impressive cast of Lakshya, the film falls short in creating its supporting characters.
Visually Appealing Cinematography & Direction
Director of Lakshya, Farhan Akhtar’s and Christopher Popp’s photography produce beautiful vistas, particularly the combat moments in Ladakh. The high-altitude battle sequences are visceral and intense, bringing a level of realism that few Bollywood films manage.
Fun fact: The actors and crew had to use oxygen cylinders between takes when filming in Ladakh due to high altitude sickness.
The War Film Lakshya: Beyond War
Lakshya is about the war, no longer merely the battle on the battlefield. The transformation of Karan Shergill serves as the backdrop for Farhan Akhtar’s cinematic masterwork, which examines self-discovery, subject, and cause. In assessing traditional war films, which depend upon fast-paced motion, Lakshya makes the spectator care about Karan’s improvement by developing tension via human stakes. Hrithik Roshan gives one of his best performances, displaying each adolescent impulsivity and mature determination. Its impact has rapidly accelerated despite its poor box office performance. Lakshya reminds us that coming across one’s purpose is crucial to genuine achievement and is more than a movie.
Music & Sound Design
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed the film’s soundtrack, while Javed Akhtar wrote its lyrics. Shaan’s “Main Aisa Kyun Hoon,” featuring Hrithik, is a laid-back, funky-hip hop music. The love duet “Agar Main Kahoon” features Hrithik and Preity. The trio employed harmonica on the song. Shankar Mahadevan’s techno-flavored patriotic song “Lakshya” precedes Kunal Ganjawala and Vijay Prakash’s patriotic song “Kandhon Se Milte.” Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam perform the melancholy ballad “Kitni Baatein.” There are two instrumental tracks, “Victory” and “Separation”. Excel adopted the trumpet piece of “Victory” as background music for their logo.
