Thug Life (2025 film) released on 5th June 2025 and opened to mixed word of mouth. But the Thug Life Reviews on social media are mostly negative. The film marks re-union of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after 38 years. Before this, they had collaborated for Nayakan. Thug Life Official Trailer had received mixed response too but even then expectations were sky high due to the legendary collaboration. Thug Life movie ticket booking(s) showed huge decline post release and this is not a good sign for the film as Thug Life Budget is ₹ 200 crore without adding Kamal Haasan’s fee. The Plot: Routine and Predictable Stuff

Thug Life is a kind of film that has been seen many times since ages. The film is based on Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker (Kamal Haasan) and how his near and dear ones want him to die and attain his power and status. Sakthivel is put behind the bars and he appoints Amaran (Silmambarasan) to take care of the mafia business in his absence. Later, Amaran attacks Sakthivel due to certain misunderstandings but Sakthivel returns. The remaining film revolves around the revenge aspect and this fragment is the biggest letdown in the film. Good Actors Carry Poorly Written Characters

Thug Life Cast includes Kamal Haasan who has done some spectacular work. The aura he carries at this age is indescribable in words. Next is Silambarasan who has also done a good job. Trisha’s role emerges as the weakest as her character has not been written properly. There are other actors like Abhirami, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nassar, Ali Fazal etc and all of them have done good work but the characters have not been written that well. For emotions to work on a whole new level, establishing the characters is a must.

Technical Aspects: A Mixed Bag

Mani Ratnam’s direction is outdated. The same film, with elevation blocks would’ve been better, to some extent. Not taking away his achievements but it’s just that the current generation needs something that Prashanth Neel or Lokesh Kanagaraj bring to the table.

The background score is not that strong. AR Rahman’s score is weak and does not amplify the stuff seen on the screen. Someone like Anirudh would have ensured that all the high points are impactful. Even GV Prakash for that matter. These guys know how to make the most out of elevation shots.

The cinematography is ordinary but it all boils down to the point that the script is weak. The screenwriting is poor and the Hindi dialogues are very pale even though the dubbing is good.
